VT MÄK Announces the Release of DI-Guy 13, the first major release of DI-Guy as part of the MÄK family of products.

VT MÄK is pleased to announce the release of DI-Guy 13, the first major release of DI-Guy as part of the MÄK family of products. This is a tremendously exciting release as both a major step forward for MÄK and for the DI-Guy product suite.

This release focused extensively on improving both the quantity and the quality of the content. With the addition of all the new features, we also made a major effort to make it all easier to configure and use! Major new features include:

Content
New Characters – One of MÄK’s key initiatives has been to drastically increase the amount of quality content available to our customers. DI-Guy users are building scenarios for a constantly increasing set of activities – military, civilian, medical, athletic, and aviation, to name a few. Regardless of your scenario, having an expanding library of high-quality skinned characters to pick from is important. This release adds hundreds of new high-quality characters to your toolbox. Some of the new characters include more male casuals, children, EMTs, civilian police, military and civilian aviation personnel, and a wide variety of soldiers in service uniforms.

New Models – This release also adds an extensive amount of prop and non-human models distributed with DI-Guy. New planes, busses, cars, and emergency vehicles complement a wide selection of chairs, desks, and other civilian objects found in villages or towns.

Streamlined Entity Configuration
It is now easy to apply any hand held device, like a phone, a weapon, or water bottle to any character. Previously, each character had a separate configuration for each item that could be placed in their hands. Now you can find the character you like and have it hold anything. This drastically diminishes the work required to properly configure a scene.

Instancing
DI-Guy 13 makes it easy to build scenes including these many new characters while still experiencing good performance by introducing instanced characters. Using instancing, the graphics card can draw all similar character types in a single draw call that was previously required for every individual character. This means you can now have very large scenes with lots of characters and have the scene render very quickly.

Real Time Inverse Kinematics (IK)
Our characters now support Real Time IK. This enables characters to align and connect their feet and arms correctly to complicated terrain. For example, characters can now place the bottom of their foot on each step when climbing or descending a set of stairs. The same benefit can be found when characters are walking up a hill; the foot will now be placed and aligned correctly on the ground. Animation Blend Trees

Controlling characters has always been achieved in DI-Guy by assigning "Actions," but each Action typically mapped directly to a single Motion (animation). This meant that users have traditionally been responsible for knowing what Motions were available, and for explicitly assigning the corresponding Actions as desired speed, direction, and other parameters changed. If the character was tasked to move fast, the user had to assign a Run Action; when the character slowed down, the user needed to explicitly assign a Walk Action. The Action concept did support smooth transitions between Motions, but did not allow, for example, a jogging character to blend together elements of the Walk and Run Motions. To achieve more complicated results, such as a character running and aiming, or a diagonal shuffle in between strafing and walking, a user needed to manage and track a wide set of Motions. With the introduction of Animation Blend Trees, DI-Guy 13 decouples Actions from individual Motions. Characters can be assigned a high-level Action such as: “Move upright, with this speed, in this direction, and aiming at that guy,” and DI-Guy will automatically pick the appropriate Motion. If there isn’t a single Motion that completely meets the Action requirements, two or more Motions may be automatically blended together to provide smooth and realistic results.

Easier Animation Editing/Creation
You can now import and export animations directly to the Collada format, where standard tools can then be used to modify or build new animations. This makes it much easier and cheaper for you to maintain any custom animations your project requires.

Better Interoperability
This release introduces support for HLA Evolved. The DI-Guy FOM extensions can now be used with a custom DI-Guy FOM Module. This will make it much easier to integrate DI-Guy scenario into your HLA Evolved Federation.
