Vortex, “the next generation” Vehicle Dynamics Solution

Deliver tomorrow’s real-time vehicle simulation today. Vortex, the Vehicle Dynamics toolkit from CM Labs supports a new level of integration for vehicles and terrain: vehicles can collide and interact with any object, including obstacles and other vehicles. It allows you to create physically accurate, real-time, interactive simulations of vehicles – whether they need to grip the road or hit the pot holes – and to integrate them to your applications.

Having gained considerable success and expertise in the 3D visual simulation market, EDS Technologies has widened its portfolio with Vortex Tool Kit, CMLabs.

The Vortex Simulation Toolkit is a development platform for physically accurate modeling of ground vehicles, terrain, soil, machines, robots, and other real-world objects. The Vortex Toolkit is suitable for real-time, interactive, 3D graphics simulations. In addition, there are a number of add-on modules available for the Vortex Toolkit that extend functionality, or make simulation easier. These included a tracked and wheeled vehicle module, an interactive particle system and cables.

The Vortex Toolkit uses existing 3D graphics models, and links into existing applications. The need for scripted animation and complex interaction tables is completely removed by the Vortex Toolkit, accelerating development time and lowering project costs.

A vxVehicle object simulates all the basic elements of a real ground vehicle: chassis, wheels or tracks, suspension, and power train. The power train includes engine, transmission, torque converter and differential. These modules can be configured using standard engineering specification data such as engine power-torque performance curves. Likewise, track, tire, and terrain properties are parameterized using common empirical data. Simulations can be tuned and validated against real-world measurements.

CMLabs’ Vortex technology for the automotive market continues to gain ground. There is a great deal of potential in this market beyond engineering development, including marketing and operations training applications. PSA Peugeot, Renault and Toyota all use Vortex for various applications such as virtual assembly, robotics and traffic research.
