| The first of these is OPTICast, an automatic casting design optimization tool. OPTICast combines the SOLIDCast Casting Simulation package from Finite Solutions with the HyperOpt mathematical optimization system from Altair. Using SOLIDCast, the foundry engineer can import a three-dimensional model of a casting from CAD and analyze the shape for suggested size and location of riser and gating components. This model is then submitted to OPTICast, where the engineer specifies the range of allowable changes, required levels of casting quality (such as soundness or porosity) and a variable to be optimized such as yield. OPTICast then begins running simulations of the casting process, automatically varying the design until the optimum configuration is reached. This process, which is entirely automatic, can typically improve both yield and quality by up to 30 percent, resulting in a much more competitive product for the foundry.
