| The second software product developed under this EMTEC project is FLOWCast, which models fluid flow during the filling stage of the casting process. While other flow models have been developed, most are extremely complex with long solution times, and are not practical for the typical foundry. FLOWCast uses the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) kernel from Altair to create a fast, accurate and extremely easy-to-use flow modeling package which can be used by even small foundries without extensive technical support staffs. This module allows the foundry to visualize flow of molten metal into a mold cavity, verifying design of the gating system and allowing prediction of defects such as misruns or cold shuts. In addition, the flow model coupled with heat transfer allows a more accurate starting point for modeling the solidification of the metal casting in SOLIDCast.
