PLM SOLUTIONS > CASTING SIMULATION

Casting Simulation is a technology to design, visualize and optimize the casting process before making expensive molds or patterns. It simulates and visualizes the entire process of casting the part and fine-tunes the design to produce the best casting possible, at the lowest cost.

  SOLIDCast
The SOLIDCast helps to make the casting on the computer before it's made on the foundry floor. It helps to visualize how the casting will solidify before making pattern equipments and dies. SOLIDCast simulates castings poured in gray iron, ductile iron, steel, aluminum, copper-base, magnesium, nickel-based and almost any other alloy. A database of several hundred alloys, with all pertinent properties, is included in the software.

Key Features

  • SOLIDCast can simulate molding processes such as green sand, chemically-bonded sand, investment and permanent mold
  • SOLIDCast contains both Gating and Riser Design Wizards™ tools that allows to rig new castings in just a few minutes
  • With SOLIDCast the user can import 3D models from commercial CAD packages, or build own models without CAD
  • Outputs are available with fully movable 3D models, X-ray images, high-resolution color plots and Windows video files

  FLOWCast
FLOWCast is a full-featured CFD simulation tool which works in conjunction with models created by SOLIDCast. It helps to see the movement of molten metal through gating systems and how it fills the mold. FLOWCast models convection, conduction and radiation in the mold cavity, to analyze the casting and gating design. This will predict and minimize flow-related defects such as misruns due to premature solidification, or oxide formation or mold erosion due to excessive velocities during filling.

Key Features

  • With FLOWCast, one can view progressive temperature, fluid velocity and fluid pressure during the fill, from any angle of view
  • FLOWCast is integrated with SOLIDCast and uses models and meshes created with SOLIDCast
  • Results from a FLOWCast simulation can be used in SOLIDCast to model the final solidification of the casting

  OPTICast
OPTICast works in conjunction with SOLIDCast and automates the simulation process. Using OPTICast, the foundry engineer can start with an initial design and the system modifies the initial design and running simulations automatically and achieves an optimum result. The engineer specifies the range of allowable changes, required levels of casting quality (such as soundness or porosity) and a variable to be optimized such as yield. OPTICast then begins running simulations of the casting process, automatically varying the design until the optimum configuration is reached

Key Features

  • OPTICast frees foundry engineers from the repetitive task of trial-and-error design
  • OPTICast gives flexibility to the foundry engineer to set the objective functions like to maximize the yield, minimize shrinkage or minimize solidification time
